Anti-Ageing Skin Care Tips

Ageing gracefully is the goal of hopeful, optimistic women everywhere. Wrinkle-free may not be an option – unless you’re a Real Housewife – but looking healthy (and darn good!) as the decades go by isn’t too much to ask.

The key to a beautiful complexion is daily care and smart prevention. At no point is it too late to start caring for your skin; so, we at Rush thought we’d share our very best anti-ageing skin care tips. No need to thank us – it’s our pleasure!

1: Don’t wait for the first signs of ageing skin, like wrinkles and dryness, to appear. The sooner you start looking after your skin, the sooner it will glow with health.

2: Wash with a gentle cleanser because this will remove any skin care products or makeup you’ve applied during the day – as well as natural oils, pollutants, and bacteria that have accumulated. It also allows freshly applied cosmetics to enter your skin easier and work more effectively!

3: Protect your skin from the sun by seeking shade where possible (especially between the hours of 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. when the sun is at its hottest), covering up in style, and slathering on sunscreen every day before going outdoors. There’s enough evidence to suggest the sun prematurely ages our skin that scientists have actually coined the term ‘photoaging’ to account for this phenomenon. The same principle applies to other harmful UV rays, such as those emitted from indoor tanning beds, so be sure to avoid these as well.

4: Use moisturising products liberally on your skin. One of the biggest reasons for fine lines is inadequate skin hydration; however, this is easily fixed with a good moisturiser. Look for products that contain water-binding humectants like glycerine and hyaluronic acid. An occlusive like petrolatum (commercially known as Vaseline, although Aquaphor also works) and mineral oil at night can similarly prevent water evaporating from your skin. But be sure the area is clean to avoid trapping bacteria!

5: Steer clear of trauma. This kind of goes without saying, but it should still be noted. Since mature skin is more fragile, trauma can have larger effects. And while there isn’t much evidence on the impact of how you apply your skin care products, studies have found that pressing your face against a pillow as you sleep can cause permanent ‘sleep wrinkles’.

6: Giving up smoking will definitely help to maintain your skin’s elasticity and firmness. Tobacco smoke contains toxins that can lead to ‘smoker’s face’, signs of which include a dull and dry complexion, premature lines and wrinkles, and leathery skin.

7: Get plenty of rest. It’s known as ‘beauty sleep’ for a reason; this is the time when our bodies refresh and renew themselves, replenishing skin cells to function optimally.

8: Eat healthy foods. A nutritious diet promotes good skin. Incorporate lots of colourful fruits and veggies, lean proteins, and unsaturated fats into your mealtimes to cleanse and nourish your body from the inside out.

9: Look after the rest of your body, too. Apart from your face, the key areas that expose your age are your neck, chest, and hands. Don’t neglect them! Keep covered in sunscreen and moisturiser and no one will ever know your true age.

Follow a healthy skin care regimen to minimise the signs of ageing and maintain your best beautiful skin for longer.
