This can happen for different reasons:

  • Daily wear and tear (combing your hair too hard and causing stress
    to the hair cuticle)
  • Colouring, chemical services or environment
  • Heated tools, tongs, hairdryers
  • Too much exposure to the sun without using protective sprays

1. Miracle products

There are many products that claim they can “heal split ends”. These products can be used to seal split ends so they look better, but the damage is still there. While this will help the look of frizzy hair, this is only a short term solution. The only way to stop further damage to the hair is by cutting split ends off. This will maintain healthy looking locks and steer you away from straggly looking ends.

2. Regular trims

Regularly trimming your hair every 6-8 weeks will maintain healthy looking hair and reduce the risk of split ends. If you are trying to grow your hair you can ask to have just the split ends cut off.

3. At home

Make sure to use a small amount of shampoo to clean the scalp and let that rinse through to the ends. You do not need to apply lots of shampoo to scrub the ends as this is enough to clean the hair. It also means you are not scrubbing potentially more dry areas of the hair. Let the conditioner soak in for a few minutes before rinsing out. Seal with cold water to flatten the cuticle and hair will look shiny and smooth.

4. Treatments

Washing and drying your hair regularly can cause damage due to heat exposure. Make sure to use conditioner every time you wash the hair and treat your hair with a mask like Shu Uemura – art of hair silk bloom Restorative Treatment at least once a week.

5. Brushes

Use a soft brush such as or natural bristle brush or Tangle Teaser when brushing your hair to avoid pulling and tugging at the hair as this can rip sections of the hair and cause splitting.

6. At Night

Prevent knotting at night by putting your hair in a lose plait or bun.

7. Diet

Eating a healthy, balanced diet will ensure that you get everything you need to get healthy looking hair.

Ensuring you get Vitamins and minerals in your diet; such as Vitamin E which promotes:

  • Helps to strengthen the hair
  • Add shine
  • Maintain a healthy scalp
  • 8. Heat Protection

Add a heat protection cream such as Discipline Keratine Thermique to your hair care routine to ensure you protect the hair every day.
