Yes, everyone’s hair is different, but no, you shouldn’t have to settle if your hair is dull and dry. One thing many of our customers want to know, is how to get shiny, silky hair.

Jessica Hau, a member of the Rush Creative Workshop team, is here to talk us through it. Keep reading for short and long-term tips to give your locks that much-craved glossiness.

A glorious, shiny auburn mane.Tip 1 – Blow dry your strands for added shine

Achieving a shiny ‘do is not all about the washing and conditioning, just as much of it has to do with the way you dry your hair. Taking care when drying your strands can make all the difference to its overall shine. To help maintain smoothness when you dry your hair, you can ask your hairdresser about keratin treatments. Due to its natural protein, keratin is perfect for maintaining a healthy shine to your locks, especially when you blow dry. Not only that, but we specialise in offering keratin blow drys for all hair types and styles. Find your closest Rush salon here.

Tip 2 – Invest in gloss-enhancing at-home products

At home products are perfect for enhancing gloss to your locks and helping to keep them shiny. At Rush, we’ve got a couple of favourite products we use in-salon when styling your hair which you can get, to give added shine.

One is L’Oréal Pli. We always use it when we’re blow drying to calm fly-away strands, to give your ‘do a smooth finish. Another reason we love it is because it’s so flexible! You can use it on wet or dry hair making it so quick and easy to use.

Our other favourite product for adding extra shine is L’Oréal Ring Light. All you need to do to achieve a glassy shine is spray it all over your locks. That’s it! And within seconds, you go from dull, lifeless strands to ‘ooo shiny hair’!

If you want a change from enhancing your hair at home, our salons offer glossing services all around the country. You can find your local salon and their available services here.

Tip 3 – Think about how much you shampoo

We all want to keep our hair clean. But, shampooing too often, especially if your hair is thick or coily, can sometimes cause your locks to dry out, taking away natural shine. Also, we know that everyone’s hair type is different. So, balancing out when to shampoo your mane to make it silky is not easy.

Taking this into consideration, we suggest you may want to wash your hair with shampoo every other day or less. This way your strands will retain their natural oils and stop your hair from drying out quicker.

Tip 4 – Hit reset on your hair with a clarifying shampoo

Along with thinking how often you shampoo, it’s also good to think about what kind of shampoo to use. A wonderful way to reset your main is to use a clarifying shampoo. Washing away all the impurities, clarifying shampoos help to deep clean your strands and scalp. But you only need to clean your hair with a clarifying shampoo once a month, otherwise you’ll remove all those natural oils which keep your strands staying healthy.

Tip 5 – Remember to give conditioner the time it deserves

As you know, conditioner is an important part of your hair care routine. But sometimes knowing the best way to use it can be confusing. Remember to only use conditioner on the mid-lengths and ends of your hair and keep it in for around 5 minutes, then rinse it off. This will allow your hair to get the most benefit from it. An occasional leave-in conditioner is also a fabulous idea to keep your hair strong and healthy, but most of all, shiny.

Tip 6 – Comb your hair when it’s wet and brush your hair when it’s dry

It isn’t always possible when we’re in a rush but taking the time to slowly comb and brush your hair makes a dramatic difference to its health. Combing your hair when it is wet, helps to keep it smooth. Then when it is dry, brush your hair with a detangling brush, or if you can get one, a natural bristle brush. This helps to evenly distribute the natural oils of your hair.

Tip 7 – Protect your hair from the heat!

Getting vitamin D from the sun is great in moderation, but too much heat can really affect the health, and shine of your hair. This goes for hairdryers and straighteners too. That’s why we advise adding a heat protection product to your hair before styling and especially before going out in warm weather. The barrier it creates between the heat and the keratin proteins in your tresses will reward you greatly.

Tip 8 – Try enriching your diet

Did you know that eating more Omega 3 is great for your hair? Well, it is! Having more eggs, fish, and pulses throughout the week, will help you and your hair shine. But, in the quest to get your silky new hair, make sure you research before changing your diet.

Tip 9 – Let you and your hair have a good night’s sleep

Have you ever wondered how to get shiny hair overnight? It might not be quite so easy, but one thing that could help you is getting silk pillowcases. Silk is a lot softer and gentler than other pillowcase fabrics, which can cause your hair to dry out and become frizzy. Plus, silk helps to retain all the natural oils your hair needs to stay shiny and healthy. As with a change in your diet, we advise you research first before buying any pillowcases, just in case you may be allergic.
