WHY DOES HAIR FALL?

TWO REASONS WHY WOMEN EXPERIENCE HAIR-FALL

Either strands are lost from the root as part of the hair cycling process, or can break off mid-shaft, due to external stressors and styling habits. Both processes reduce the number of strands and devitalise the hair overall.

FALL FROM THE ROOTS

Each individual hair follicle has its own natural growth cycle. At the end of this cycle the bulb becomes progressively detached from the scalp and hair falls out in the shower, on your brush or on your clothes.

FALL FROM BREAKAGE

External factors and daily stressors such as heat-styling and environmental pollution can cause the fibre to weaken. Hair breaks off in the middle, creating thinner, weaker hair overall. With breakage, the hair is still growing from the bulb, but daily exposure to external aggressors can trigger inflammation at the follicle as well.

WHAT TRIGGERS HAIR-FALL?

  • STYLING TOOLS Heat styling causes dryness and weakens the hair shaft, leading to an increased rate of breakage that causes hair to fall and feel thin.
  • POLLUTION & WEATHER External seasonal and environmental factors such as pollution and UV rays can affect hair-fall.
  • STRESS Studies have shown a direct link between stress and some types of hair-fall – the good news is that this can often be reversible.
  • HORMONAL CHANGES Hormonal changes can lead to an altered hair renewal process.
  • DIET A restrictive diet or overload of certain vitamins and supplements in extreme cases has been linked to hair-fall.

The RUSH review – Jessica @askaboutjessica

Rush Wimbledon Village stylist Jessica had the opportunity to trial the new Genesis products and after using the product she concluded that:

Genesis gives your hair and scalp that extra care. I’ve been using the products since November, it gives the hair and scalp a great deep clean leaving a nice scent to the hair. Two great products are the fondant, light enough to use on roots and ends, the second is the thermique, light spray form great to detangle hair. The whole range smells amazing and fresh.

THE GENESIS EXPERTS

The anti-fall solution is backed by experts.

THE NUTRITIONIST – DR. MEGAN ROSSI

Good gut health is the key to good health and overall well-being says Dr. Rossi. She’s an expert on how to “eat yourself healthy.”. Here, she explains how nutrition can affect hair-fall.

IS A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF HAIR-FALL NORMAL?
It’s normal for people to lose anywhere from 50 – 100 hairs a day. Because all of our individual hairs are going through the life cycle at different stages, hair falls from random areas around the scalp.

WHEN IS HAIR-FALL CONSIDERED A PROBLEM?
If hair falls more than the usual daily amount, becomes focused in a pattern or discrete area, or results from significant breakage of the shaft, then that is abnormal and something to be addressed.

IS IT OK TO EXPERIENCE HAIR-FALL BEFORE AGE 35? IS THERE ANY LINK BETWEEN HAIR-FALL AND AGEING?
Hair-fall before 35 is certainly common, either from causes at the root, or more usually in the shaft from over processing and heat damage. There’s no reason for hair to fall more with ageing, but it can result from medication side effects, malnutrition, and illness, which are more common in those of advanced age.

CAN STRESS OR LACK OF SLEEP CAUSE HAIR-FALL?
There are no clear studies linking sleep quality and hair fall, but there is certainly a link between sleep quality and levels of stress hormones, and these hormones affect our hair follicle and can lead to hair-fall.

WHAT CAUSES HAIR-FALL?

There are two reasons why it happens: either it’s a reaction to external aggressors, or it’s a progressive process at the root linked to the hair’s natural cycle.

IS IT NORMAL TO SEE MY HAIR FALL WHEN I BRUSH IT?

We lose between 50 – 100 strands of hair per day, so there is nothing to worry about. Your hair is constantly renewing. On the other hand, if your hair is fragile, actions like frequent brushing or friction from a towel can sensitise it even more. Elastic bands can cause damage too. Be gentle.

THE DERMATOLOGIST – DR. LAURA SCOTT

An inspirational dermatologist, blogger and mum of three girls, Dr. Scott leads a busy life while sharing insights on her blog about everything from beauty to motherhood. She very much understands the impact of pregnancy and hormonal changes on the hair and scalp. Here she answers our most pressing questions about hair-fall.
